One part of work-life balance includes a balance between serious and fun all the time! I am not referring to "all work and no play" which is about the choice between work and play. I'm talking about having fun while at work and perhaps even during the serious moments of life.
I believe that in my career, I came across as smart, professional, caring, but also a little fun. I wasn't that constantly demanding and mean taskmaster.
- My people always worked hard for me. They worked hard because they knew that I was working hard.
- I also don't believe that they were unhappy. It was many years ago that I was told by my team at a staff meeting: "We think we should hate you, but we don't". (Note: it was because we were all working really hard!)
- At staff meetings, we got a ton of work done--but it was constantly scattered with humor.
- One of my ex-bosses, who is on the top of my respect list once said: "You might as well make fun of yourself. Because if you don't, we are going to do it for you."
My family and I laugh all the time. And I'm sure there are times when one of us cracked a joke that, on the surface, could be perceived to be at the wrong time. And I'm sure we laughed about that one again and again.
This is not about being a clown. It's not about laughter at the expense of everything else. But it is recognizing that people will work harder for you and families will be tighter by being real.
Be human. Enjoy yourself.
